MEDP Reflection

This course has helped me realize the potential tools in media that I could use to communicate. The material I learned in class has gave me a new understand of the term media. I never knew much on how television works, but taking this class I learned the anatomy of a television set. Media today is really different than back then. For one thing, producing media back then was much difficult. People had to carry heavy cameras with a crank. The evolution of media was quite fascinating. It opened my mind to the media world. We seem to be consumed by media because it’s everywhere, such as films, newspaper, advertisement, and the internet. The way that something is designed can convey meaning was also interesting. Something such as an image composition can tell us something about a picture. It led me to think about what works and what doesn’t work in a picture. For example, the way a person is position in an image could tell us if it communicates to us effectively. These camera techniques could help me on what I want to achieve when I am filming something. I find out that I enjoy designing my website in this class. It is a really fun experience to be displaying my works so other people can see it. Although, I could of done better if I put in more effort. I can see myself progress in learning about html and css. Overall, this course was enjoyable. I hope to expand my knowledge of media.

3 Dimensional Designs

Designs are everywhere in the world. One of the most intriguing designs I like are three dimensional arts. They bring depth into a picture. For example, today’s video games are mostly three dimensional like the newer Final Fantasy a role playing game. The designs are just remarkable through the stunning artwork of the three dimensional environment. It makes you feel like you were in the game itself. The true beauty in the design of Final Fantasy is the art is used to illustrate a story from encountering new areas as you progress in the game. The colors are very bright which makes it lively and fresh in the designs. We tend to make sense of the three dimensional designs in games like final fantasy as we make relationship with the real world. One of the functionally of three dimensional games like final fantasy is it leads us to different world. The designs of the creatures in final fantasy were done amazingly through computer generated graphics. These creatures were created from objects that we associated with. Something as simple as a cactus could be represented as something else. Kids are living in a fantasy world when it comes to final fantasy as we see interactivity in the game. We are draw through the designs of a three dimensional environment where we can interact with it. The used of a simple game controller helps us interact with the designs. Overall, the whole designs of 3 dimensional graphics bring us to another world that is fictional.

Homosexuality

The documentary film “OUT AT WORK” displays what it is like to live under homosexuality under the rules of a heterosexual society. It was shocking to know that if someone was not a heterosexual in marriage they would not receive health benefits. Homosexual men and women face challenges, such as the risk of being fired from work, health benefits, violent and so forth. I feel that it is wrong for a company to fired someone because on their sexual orientation. “Crackelbarrel” is one of those companies that terminate their employees if they were found out to be homosexual. I find it shocking that there were no laws to protect these homosexual men and women from laws that allow these types of things. The interview with the homosexual electric repair man about his life portrays a great example of this. His coworkers harass him because of his sexual orientation. People were socialized into thinking that homosexuality is wrong and they question their own sexuality. Their insecurities are juxtaposed to their sexuality. It is based on what is the norm of sexuality for the majority of Americans that think that homosexuality is wrong. Often this is reflected through the struggles of many homosexual men and women that fight for their rights. What scene impacted my mind the most was that it was legal to fire someone because of their sexual orientation in the United States. These people often face struggles through job securities and benefits because they are homosexual. The film promotes awareness of these struggles that homosexual men and women are facing in this contemporary society of a heterosexual norm.

What I See

What I saw was paranormal activities. The overall theme of this movie was simply haunting and disturbing. Camera movement of the film was taken from an amateur as the frame appears to be jerky. This gave the film a documentary type feels much like The Blair Witch Project. The amateur camera movement gave it a realistic look as it was actually happening. The audience gets a sense of terror from the creepy noises that lurks into the home of Micah and Katie while they sleep at night. Handheld movement does not remain consistence as we see tripod is used to stabilize the frame in the bedroom. A sense of depth is added through the open door in the repetitive bedroom scene. The empty hallway As our eyes tend to wander around from the couple, time code, and the open door to see what activities are going around in the bedroom. What I find quite interesting is the used of time code on the film. The director’s use of time code gave audience real time terror that unfolds in the film as the characters in the movie are sleeping at night. What made the movie truly disturbing was the open door. An open door is a sign of invitation as it remain constant throughout the film. Combine with a low light setting it creates an element that induces fear. The feel of the movie was quite authentic as we see a door closing on it own give as a startling feeling; Simple yet powerful enough to keep us in fear.

The museum trip

As we began our tour to the Museum of The Moving Image I saw the old television set back in the days where Television burgeoned into HDTV. I saw the filming equipment back in the days. They were bulky and primordial. As we continue our tour, I saw an interesting concept of motion. The lights flicker as I saw water being transformed into small bombs then into paper planes. There were old fashioned arcade games. We then made our way to saw some famous pictures from some actors. What really caught my eyes was the green screen tour. It is fascinating how the background can be manipulated. I learned how sound can effect how the audience perceives of a movie. Where I walked into a room, I saw a demonstration of sound being editing to fit a particular scene in a movie. Each sound creates a different experience for the audience where a particular scene is being played. I saw a lot of antique while we moved into the second floor. The advertisements back in the past were intriguing. The advancement in technology has change a lot on how we view moving images. For example, television in the past used analogue, while we are heading into the digital era. Movies back then were black and white until color came along and displaced it. Arcade games back in the past were not focus with graphics. How they looked and how we experience them will differ when we are introduce with better graphics in the game.
